The lefthander was Australia's leading scorer with 535 runs at an average of 48.63 during their run to a sixth World Cup title in India. "Selectors decided Warner would return home on the back of a successful yet demanding World Cup campaign," Cricket Australia said in a statement on Tuesday. Emerging Western Australian all-rounder Aaron Hardie has replaced Warner in the squad after making his ODI and T20 International debuts during the recent tour of South Africa. Just seven of Australia's World Cup-winning squad will play the T20s, while head coach Andrew McDonald will also skip the series, handing the reins to stand-in Andre Borovec.

"My goal is still to set my sights on playing the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean (next June) first. And I think from there, I'll probably decide what I'm going to do with white-ball cricket. Warner, Australia's leading run-scorer at the World Cup with 499 runs from nine innings, said he would not accept a central Cricket Australia contract next year, preferring to play on as a freelancer. That's something that becomes a pain in the backside as well, especially at the stage of my career I'm at." "You don't get told anything," Warner said.

Warner wants to play his last test in Sydney next January
  + stars: | 2023-06-03 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
June 3 (Reuters) - Australia opener David Warner said he will call time on his test career after playing against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) next January, if he is still in the team by then. When available, Warner has been a fixture at the top of the Australian order since his debut in 2011 but his place in the side for the World Test Championship final and Ashes series has been called into question after a run of poor form. The 36-year-old said on Saturday that he wanted to play on until the 2024 Twenty20 World Cup but would call time on his test career after the third test against Pakistan, before the two-match series against West Indies that follows. I've always said the World Cup will be my final game," Warner told reporters in Beckenham, England. "If I get through this and I can make the Pakistan series, I will definitely finish up then."

Sydney Cricket Ground gates named after Tendulkar, Lara
  + stars: | 2023-04-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
SYDNEY, April 24 (Reuters) - A set of gates at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) have been named in honour of Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara to mark the Indian's 50th birthday and the 30th anniversary of the West Indies batsman's innings of 277 at the ground. Cricket Australia said that visiting players would pass through the gates on their way to the pitch from the away dressing room in the Members Pavilion. Home players access the field via gates named after Australian great Don Bradman. "The Sydney Cricket Ground has been my favourite ground away from India," Tendulkar, who scored three centuries in five tests at the SCG and celebrated his birthday on Monday, said in a Cricket Australia news release. "I'm deeply honoured to be recognised at the Sydney Cricket Ground, as I'm sure Sachin is," said the 53-year-old Trinidadian.
Rain delays start of day four in Sydney, outlook brighter
  + stars: | 2023-01-06 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
SYDNEY, Jan 7 (Reuters) - The start of the fourth day of the third test between Australia and South Africa was delayed by light rain on Saturday but the outlook looked bright for some play at the Sydney Cricket Ground. No action was possible on Friday as heavy rains swept in from the Pacific Ocean but the forecast for the remainder of Saturday predicts only light showers. Australia have already locked up the series after comprehensive victories in Brisbane and Melbourne but need to win the final test to be certain of qualifying for this year's World Test Championship final. The hosts are set to resume their first innings on Saturday 475-4 with Usman Khawaja 195 not out and closing on his maiden test double century. SYDNEY, Nov 9 (Reuters) - New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson was frustrated by his team's sub-par performance as their Twenty20 World Cup dream ended with defeat to Pakistan in Wednesday's semi-final. The loss means Black Caps will return home without a trophy from a fifth straight white-ball World Cup, despite reaching at least the semi-finals in all of them. "The journey in this tournament has been a lot of good but it's just frustrating not put out a better performance today," he told reporters. Asked about again failing to get his hands on any silverware, Williamson reverted to his focus on performance. "And then we've got met by a side that's played a little bit better or about equal.
